Let me begin by saying I’m a blunt direct person so expect this to all be straight forward and upfront as you read. My name is Rachel Hohlweg and I’ve been in the online marketing and business optimization space for over a decade.
When it comes to online presence for businesses, I’ve seen it all and done it all. I’ve grown my own companies and helped countless others grow their companies. Where are homeowners/future homeowners finding their contractors now?
So this is crazy, but most people when they want to find someone to do a job locally hit a few sources… google, Facebook, Angies list, home advisor… but in most areas, that shows you only a few contractors. There’e no way to see a list of who’s available, their ratings, and their finished work photos or before and after remodel photos.
In today’s world people with higher incomes (which is exactly who you want to work for) expect to be able to hit google or Facebook and find you. But guess what, they’r not finding you online. They’re left to ask friends, family and neighbors if they have heard of anyone or used anyone decent.
This is why its essential for you to come up online and have a presence that high functioning high budget clients can easily find!
A word of mouth review is still a great way to do business, but it’s not enough and as the economy shifts its certainly not dependable or consistent. Customers WANT to find you this way, and you don’t need any tech knowledge to make this happen.

If you’re in the contracting field, you have jobs you’ve done, beautiful jobs either new construction and or remodels. Now it’s time to think like a customer, which may be a bit out of your comfort zone but this will make sense.
Customers are either:
Not finding you at all, or not on a dependable basis because you’re not in front of them when they search or ask around.
Not seeing the information they need to call you and make you “THE ONE” they want to work with.
These two factors alone are the difference between a business that grows as fast as you can or want to handle, or a business that leaves you in feast or famine scraping by mode digging about for jobs and leads.
More food for thought here is that the higher in demand you are, the more you can charge and the longer clients will be willing to wait to let you be the builder they choose.
There have been great economic times these past few years for building, but the pool is starting to dry up a bit and it’s essential to stay ahead of the curve to capture the business even in the slower times!
Answering these questions for customers before they call you will prequalify all your leads. This means, by the time a potential client calls you, all these questions are answered and they’re ready to move forward and you don’t need to “sell them”.
Do you offer new construction builds, remodels or both?
What styles of homes are you comfortable with? Big custom builds for example?
Do they need a certain type of home design or blueprint for your crew?
If they don’t have a designer/architect do you have someone you suggest?
What’s the average build time expectancy?
Do you handle all the building permits?
What’s your fee and how is that calculated?
Is there any warranty you offer on your craftsmanship?
What do your before and after photos look like?
What areas do you service so I can make sure my home is in the right location before calling?
A simple website and FB page are negligible in cost but will prequalify all your potential leads and provide all this information prior to the client calling you so you know they’re a good fit from jump. Easy peasy. We just need to show the customer what they need to feel comfortable and know you’re the person for the job!
This just needs to be set up one time! You can always add new photos of good work you’ve done lately to keep things fresh as well!
Now you have an idea of what your clients want to see, so how to give it to them and get in front of them in 5 steps.
Answer the list of questions above. To frame your website this information will be essential to open the gates to qualified leads and calls coming your way. Collect as many photos of your work as possible.
Finished homes, finished projects and before and after photos of anything possible that highlights your style and abilities. Pictures go a LONG way in building client confidence and trust. Make sure you have a business Google account, Facebook page, Instagram page and website.
These 4 platforms are where you want to start. If you have old accounts on these platforms just make sure everything is up to date and you have login access. Add pics of anything that looks great that will attract clients when they see it.

Pick a day every 1-2 weeks to post updates and have your happy clients leave reviews for you on Google AND Facebook.
Google LOVES active accounts and this will only take you about 10 minutes each time to post a new photo, a promotion or whatever is on your mind or new at your company. It will help naturally boost your rankings and drive more visibility when people are searching for contractors in your area.
